Use the example or enter a roof area you already know. Compare measured roof surface with a footprint adjusted for pitch, then see an Oklahoma/OKC architectural asphalt planning range.
A roof budget changes with both the measured surface and the work beneath it. This tool helps you see the area relationship before discussing a property-specific scope.
The figures are an Oklahoma/OKC planning scenario, checked October 27, 2026. They are not a measured assessment of your roof.

Calculate a Roof Planning Range
This example covers 1,500–3,000 square feet of roof surface. Keep the 2,000 square-foot example if your measurements are unknown.
Keep the 2,000 sq. ft. example, or enter an area you already know. Roof footprint means the area covered, not total living space.
Keep the 6:12 example unless you already know the pitch. Pitch helps check material suitability.
Planning budget example
Planning example for 2,000 sq. ft. of actual roof surface, using architectural asphalt shingles. Ordinary tear-off is included.
One existing shingle layer, normal access, moderate complexity and usable decking. Wood replacement, extra layers and other trades need separate allowances.
Oklahoma/OKC architectural asphalt planning range for 1,500–3,000 square feet of measured roof surface.

How the roof planning range works
The range uses $4.50–$7.50 per square foot of measured roof surface for an Oklahoma/OKC architectural asphalt replacement scenario. It supports 1,500–3,000 square feet of roof surface.
The scenario includes removal of one existing layer and assumes normal access, moderate roof complexity and a usable deck. Extra layers, damaged wood, unusual access and work by other trades change the project total.
A footprint is the area covered by the roof. The calculator adjusts that area for pitch; total house living space is a different measurement. Keep the example if your roof measurements are unknown.
Roof Cost Calculator Details
The useful part is understanding which measurement and work scope sit behind the total.
Footprint or roof surface
A footprint is the area the roof covers when viewed from above. Pitch increases its surface area. House living area may include multiple floors and leave out a garage or overhangs, so it should not be treated as a roof measurement.
The supported scenario
The range is $4.50–$7.50 per square foot of measured roof surface for architectural asphalt shingles in the Oklahoma/OKC area. It assumes one existing layer, normal access, moderate complexity and a usable deck.
Costs beyond the example
Extra removal layers, damaged wood, unusual access and work by other trades need separate allowances. Metal and commercial systems need their own scope and pricing. Read the roof cost guide to see how the work changes the budget.
Roof Cost Calculator FAQs
Why can the footprint give a higher result than surface area?
A pitched roof has more surface than the flat area it covers. The calculator applies the entered pitch to a footprint; it does not add slope again when you select known roof surface.
Why does the calculator reject my roof area?
The documented scenario supports 1,500–3,000 square feet of actual roof surface. A footprint adjusted for pitch must also fall in that range. Use a supported example or contact us about the property.
Can I use this for a flat roof?
No. The asphalt scenario needs a pitch of at least 2:12. A low-slope roof needs a suitable system and separate project planning.
